Amanda, I do not notice a large spike in my electric bill when using these. In any case, the cost of growing seedlings instead of purchasing transplants will balance that out.
I 8767 ve got my husband working on writing some up. He built it years ago before I started blogging, so we don 8767 t have any of his original notes anymore. Maybe next week?
Tony since we are having a heat wave here in southern California I have monarchs laying eggs and caterpillars hatching I have counted over 55 eggs and tiny caterpillars in my garden. I have about 75 new milkweeds just coming out in pots, and more seeds planted, plus about 855 old milkweeds that are just putting out their new growth from being cut back for winter, so I think I 8767 ll have enough for them to eat. But I 8767 m sure I 8767 ll have to do a lot of relocating as the cats get bigger. The milkweeds in pots are for our garden club spring plant sale and replacing my older plants that don 8767 t come back.
If you look at the back of a seed packet for a vegetable, much of the time there is information about whether the plant likes full sun, shade, how far apart to plant, etc. Online or print nursery/seed catalogs should have the same zone information.
You are most welcome! I 8767 ve found an increasing need and want for more in-depth articles to help round out the overwhelming amount of introductory ones.
(Quick Note: Sometimes you can get away with planting a vegetable that requires a warmer zone, but be warned that this plant is almost always going to die come winter, even if it’s a biennial or perennial.)
I planted several different types of seeds in growing containers and now find that some seeds like Mexican sunflower have grown big enough that the dome doesn 8767 t fit anymore but the Joe Pye Weed and milkweed hasn 8767 t even started yet. Will the seeds that haven 8767 t started yet be ok uncovered as long as they are on heat mats and under the grow lights? I will know better next year! Thank you. Kim
Joy, Thank you for your kind words. I grow lettuce indoors all winter and stick to the 66 hours on and 8 hours off lighting schedule without any problems. The florescent lights are not as strong as real sunlight and I believe the lettuce grows better with the longer lighting period. Lettuce also grows best in a cool location and will bolt or go to seed if your room is very warm.
Since tropical milkweed is a very popular milkweed with monarchs (especially during the migration) I have addressed precautions that gardeners can take to prevent these issues including: 6. cutting down plants to the ground in November/December, 7. potting tropical milkweed to use for raising instead, then cutting back and overwintering
Good morning! Great post! Maybe you can answer this question for me. So I planted some herbs in a jar. They grew alright for about two weeks, were about three or so inches tall. And then all of a sudden they just withered and died. I don 8767 t know if I over watered them or what I may have done. I done have that much that much of a green thumb and have lost about half dozen plants this winter most likely due to poor lighting in our apartment and it 8767 s drafty and I never know how much or when to water them. Anyway, this question was about the herbs and I got off on a tangent which happens sometimes 🙂 Sorry about that. Maybe you know why they withered perhaps? Thanks!
